DESCRIPTION: 2-hour, 1-day and 3-day courses are being offered to fill the need for specific training in digital imaging for those in science, medicine and engineering. The focus is on images taken through microscopes, and includes brightfield, fluorescence and electron microscopy images; as well as on other areas of research, including ophthalmic, radiologic and copystand imaging of biological samples.
The critical focus will be on presenting methods that comply with accepted ethical standards in the scientific community. Ethical considerations include minimizing post-processing, recording steps that are implemented, reporting steps that are used, and avoiding common mistakes when processing images (e.g., reducing resolution, over- and under-saturation, retaining uneven illumination, etc.).
The courses are designed for principal investigators, students and key personnel involved in imaging tasks.
Courses are packaged so that everyone can get training according to the following subject areas and time frames:
Image Integrity. A 1 hour, image integrity lecture is given to train attendees in what must be done to protect against scientific misconduct in regard to digital imaging.

| Quick Photoshop Processing. A 2-hour course that includes a CD with add-on automation action buttons for Photoshop (see AutoPhotoshop): a means to also record steps taken in post-processing of images. The use of Adobe Bridge, Lightroom and Aperture (for Mac) also covered. |
| Methods in Photoshop, Bridge, Image J and GIMP ($99.50). A 1-day course going over methods and functions used in primarily in Adobe's Photoshop and Bridge, but also includes functions in the free programs Image J and GIMP. Includes a CD with instruction materials and add-on automation action buttons for Photoshop (see AutoPhotoshop): a means to also record steps taken in post-processing of images. |
Post-Processing in Photoshop I & II (cost varies by location). 2-Day Hands on course (generally taken with the Image Quantitation course) with less than 15 attendees covering the major elements of the post-processing workflow (noise removal, tonal correction, merging, colocalization, pseudocoloring, sharpening, uneven illumination correction, cropping, etc.) for both brightfield and fluorescent samples from relevant sources (e.g., confocal, SHG, EM, etc.). The post-processing steps will be described for Photoshop (along with Bridge, Lightroom and Aperture) and, if time permits, the free program that emulates Photoshop: GIMP. Image J will also be covered when appropriate. For outputs--which include video, posters (inkjets), electronic documents, on screen presentations, laserjets, 3D imaging and publication—several applications will be discussed, including Powerpoint, Word, Acrobat, Illustrator, and QuickTime. The programs will be covered on both Mac and PC operating systems, and students MUST bring their own laptops with a version of Photoshop (Photoshop 6x, 7x, CS, CS2, CS3, CS4, CS5)!

Image Quantitation (cost varies by location): 1-day hands on course (taken with the 2-day course above) for learning methods for separating regions of interest from surrounding areas for subsequent measurement. This portion of the class differs in significant ways from conventional image analysis classes. The bonus of typical image analysis classes lie in the numerous ways presented for segmenting images (e.g., edge detectors, auto-thresholding, segmenting by color, etc.), but the bain is that the application of these segmentation methods is that they don’t help with your images. That’s because three conditions have to be met before features can be adquately separated: 1) images must be evenly illuminated, 2) noise has to be reduced, and 3) the tonal range of related images has to be matched (except when measuring optical density/intensity). These issues are NOT typically addressed in image analysis presentations.
In this workshop, the focus will be on solving the 3 conditions using tools within Photoshop, and, to a lesser extent in Image J and GIMP. In addition, basic stereology methods will be covered. The focus is on image segmentation techniques that work. |
